Canada Express Entry new rules 2026

June 13, 2026

Canada changed its Express Entry rules in 2026 and the change is big. The new Express Entry rules ask for more work experience for category draws. Many Pakistani applicants do not know this yet. Some made a plan that no longer works. This guide tells you the new rules in simple words. It also shows you what to do next.

What Are the Express Entry New Rules in 2026?

On 18 February 2026, Canada made a new rule. The change came from Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab. She spoke in Toronto. She said category draws now need more work experience. The old rule asked for 6 months but the new rule asks for 12 months. So the time has doubled.

IRCC also added new job groups. These are:

  • Researchers with Canadian work experience
  • Senior managers with Canadian work experience
  • Transport occupations
  • Skilled military recruits

You can read the official details on the IRCC category-based selection page.

What Is a Category Based Draw?

Express Entry has two main draw types. One is the general draw that picks the top scores from the whole pool and the other is the category draw. It picks people from one job group or one skill.

Category draws are good news for many people. They often have a lower CRS cutoff. So you can get picked with a smaller score. This is why so many Pakistani applicants aim for them. To learn how points work, read our guide on the CRS score breakdown.

The Express Entry 12-Month Rule Explained

This is the heart of the change. To join a category draw you now need 12 months of work in that job, which is double the old rule of just 6 months.

But one part of this helps you, because the new 12 months does not need to be in one go. You can add up your work from many jobs or many periods, so short gaps in your history are fine. The old 6-month rule asked for one unbroken stretch, but the new rule is more open this way.

The Three Year Window

Your 12 months must fall inside the last 3 years. This window moves each day. It does not follow the calendar year. So if today is 15 June 2026, the window covers about the last three years, back to around June 2023. Old work that falls out of this window does not count.

Full Time and Part Time

Full time means at least 30 hours a week. Part time also counts, but it counts less. Say you work 15 hours a week. Then you need 24 months to reach the same 12 full-time months.

Where the Work Can Be

This is good for Pakistani applicants. Your work can be in Canada or in Pakistan. It depends on the category. But there is one rule to note. Time as a full-time student in Canada does not count. Co-op work during study in Canada does not count either.

What This Means for Pakistani Applicants

For many Pakistani applicants, the Express Entry new rules change the timeline. The old path was to build six months of work, then enter a category draw. That door is now closed until you reach a full year. This hits fresh graduates from Pakistani universities and people who just switched into a new field.

There is a bright side for those who already qualify. Pakistan has many experienced doctors, nurses, engineers, and IT workers with well over a year in their field. A strong Pakistani profile may get picked at a lower score than before.

So how is the new rule working so far? As of June 2026, ten category draws have run this year. Their cutoffs ranged from 169 to 477, while the general CEC draws stayed much higher, from 507 to 518. So the category path still gives a big advantage to those who qualify. Learn more on CIC News.

Which Categories Should Pakistanis Watch in 2026?

Some categories are very strong for Pakistani profiles. Here are the main ones and their recent CRS cutoffs. Treat these as a guide only, as each draw is different.

Category

Recent CRS Cutoff

Good For

Healthcare

Around 460 to 480

Doctors, nurses, allied health

French language

Around 393 to 419

Anyone with strong French

Trades

Around 477

Skilled trade workers

Physicians

As low as 169

School teachers and education staff

The French category is the most open path. Its cutoff stays far below the general draw. To read more on points, see our guide on how to improve your CRS score.

What Should You Do Now?

Do not get confused about the Express Entry new rules, make a clear plan instead. Here are five steps to take in 2026.

  1. Count your work months. Check that you have at least 12 months of experience in your category occupation, gained within the last 3 years.
  2. Prepare strong proof. Get reference letters from your employers. Each letter should show your job title, your hours, and your main duties. Your duties must match the NOC 2021 code for your category.
  3. Raise your language score. A higher IELTS score adds many CRS points. Moving from CLB 7 to CLB 9 can add around 50 points or more, depending on your profile. This is often the fastest way to lift your score.
  4. Get your ECA done early. Your Pakistani degree must be checked by an approved body before it counts. This step takes time. Start it early so it does not hold up your whole file.
  5. Explore a Provincial Nominee Program. A provincial nomination adds 600 points to your CRS score. This almost always leads to an invitation in the next draw. Learn more about how Provincial Nominee Program

Common Mistakes to Avoid Under the Express Entry New Rules

  • Counting student time in Canada: Work you did while a full-time student in Canada does not count, even on a co-op term. Note that work done while studying in Pakistan may still count for some categories.
  • Using old work experience: Work experience older than 3 years falls out of the window and does not count.
  • Wrong noc code: Your job duties must match the NOC code for your category. A wrong match can stop your file.
  • Waiting too long: Some people just wait to get into pool, but it is better to raise your IELTS, get your ECA done, or aim for a PNP at the same time.

What Is Coming Next in Express Entry?

More change may come soon. IRCC has shared a plan for the future. These are only ideas for now, but it is smart to know them early.

The biggest idea is to join the three Express Entry programs into one. This new program may ask for a high school diploma, CLB 6 in all four skills, and it may ask for one year of work in the last three years.

IRCC may also change the CRS score. High-wage jobs may get extra points. Job offer points may come back, but only for high-wage workers. Talks on these ideas started in spring 2026. These new rules may come in late 2026 or early 2027. We will update this guide when the rules become final.

Frequently Asked Questions

When did the Express Entry 12-month rule start?

It started on 18 February 2026. From that date, category draws need 12 months of work, not 6.

Does the 12 months need to be in Canada?

No, that work can be in Canada or in Pakistan. It depends on the category, but time worked while you were a full-time student in Canada does not count, even on a co-op term.

Does this new rule change my main Express Entry profile?

No. This rule only affects the category draws. You can still enter the Express Entry pool and compete in the general draws as before. The 12-month rule decides who is eligible for a category, not who can join the pool.

What if I only have 6 months of work?

You must wait until you reach 12 months. The good news is you can add up work from more than one job. It does not need to be in one stretch. While you wait, work on your IELTS, get your ECA done, or build a PNP plan.

Which category is easiest for Pakistani applicants?

Healthcare is one of the strongest paths. Pakistan has many doctors, nurses, and health workers, and healthcare draws often have a lower cutoff than the general draw
