Canada PR age limit explained

November 2, 2026

For many Pakistani professionals, age becomes a major concern when planning to immigrate to Canada. Does turning 40 or 45 mean you have lost your chance of obtaining permanent residence? Not necessarily. There is no Canada PR age limit, but Express Entry reduces CRS age points after 29, and they reach zero at 45. This guide explains the CRS points awarded at every age, how the Federal Skilled Worker Program assesses age and which immigration pathways remain open after 35, 40 and 45.

Key Facts: Canada PR Age Limit

  • Maximum age: No general upper limit for permanent residence
  • Highest CRS age points: 110 without an accompanying spouse and 100 with one, between ages 20 and 29
  • Point reductions: About 5 points a year from age 30, rising to 11 points a year from age 41
  • Zero CRS age points: At age 45 and over
  • Federal Skilled Worker age points: 12 points from age 18 to 35, falling to zero at 47
  • Strongest boost after 40: A nomination through an Express Entry-aligned PNP stream adds 600 CRS points

Does Canada Have a Maximum Age for Permanent Residence?

No. Canada has no general maximum age for permanent residence under its federal economic immigration programs. Instead, age affects your score under Express Entry and the Federal Skilled Worker Program, and some provincial streams set their own age ranges.

In Express Entry, applicants under 18 receive no age points. Points peak between ages 20 and 29, then fall each year from 30 until they reach zero at 45.

Applicants aged 45 or over can still qualify if they meet the requirements of an eligible program and build a competitive CRS score through language, education, skilled work experience, a job offer or a provincial nomination. Our CRS score breakdown explains how each factor adds up.

How Many CRS Points Do You Lose After 29?

Without an accompanying spouse, you lose about 5 to 6 points a year from age 30 to 40, then 11 points a year from 41 to 44. With an accompanying spouse, you lose 5 points a year until 40, then 10 a year. Here is how much an applicant without an accompanying spouse loses compared with age 29:
  • At 35: 33 fewer points (77 instead of 110)
  • At 40: 60 fewer points (50 instead of 110)
  • At 45: No age points left
Express Entry updates your age points on each birthday while your profile is in the pool. Delaying your profile to improve one factor can cost more age points than the improvement adds, especially after 40.

Federal Skilled Worker Age Points on the 67-Point Grid

The Federal Skilled Worker Program uses a separate 100-point grid from CRS, and you need at least 67 points across six selection factors to qualify. Age is worth up to 12 points, based on your age on the day IRCC receives your application.

You must also meet the program’s minimums, including CLB 7 in all four language skills and at least 1 year of continuous skilled work experience.

How to Get Canada PR After 35, 40 and 45

Applicants over 35 can make up for lost age points in two ways: by earning points that do not depend on age, or by using programs that do not score age at all.
  • Provincial nomination: A nomination through an Express Entry-aligned PNP stream adds 600 CRS points, which outweighs any age loss. See our guide to PNPs for Pakistani professionals.
  • Category-based draws: Recent 2026 cut-offs included 475 for healthcare (4 September), 476 for trades (1 October) and 407 for French (27 October), compared with 519 in the Canadian Experience Class draw of 15 October. Only candidates who meet each category’s requirements are invited.
  • Canadian experience or a job offer: From 3 November 2026, Canadian work experience in a high-wage occupation earns up to 70 extra points. A qualifying job offer earns 50, 70 or 100 points depending on the wage level, with no LMIA needed, and IRCC awards whichever of the two is higher.
  • Language scores: Raising English from CLB 7 to CLB 9 in all four skills adds 56 points without a spouse, and CLB 10 adds 68, close to or above the 60 age points lost by 40. French at NCLC 7 adds up to 50 more.
  • Spouse as principal applicant: If your spouse is younger or has a stronger CRS profile, they can apply as the principal applicant.
  • Programs without age points: The Atlantic Immigration Program and the Rural Community Immigration Pilot assess job offers, work experience and language instead of age.

Our guide on how to improve your CRS score fast covers each of these steps in detail.

Do Provincial Nominee Programs Have Age Limits?

Most provincial streams have no age limit. Express Entry-aligned streams usually select candidates based on their CRS profile, although some provinces use their own points grids that include age. Base streams generally focus on job offers, work experience and local labour demand.

A few base streams set age ranges, including:

  • Nova Scotia Skilled Worker: 21 to 55
  • Newfoundland and Labrador Skilled Worker: 21 to 59

Can You Immigrate to Canada After 50 or 55?

Yes, although Canada does not offer a retirement visa. Applicants over 50 usually qualify through one of these routes, none of which relies on CRS age points:

  • Employer-driven PNP streams: A Canadian job offer can support a provincial nomination, although it does not guarantee one. Many streams have no upper age limit, while some cap applicants at 55 or 59.
  • Atlantic Immigration Program and Rural Community Immigration Pilot: Neither uses CRS age points. Both require a qualifying job offer, plus work experience, education and language results.
  • Business and entrepreneur streams: Several provinces accept experienced business owners who invest in and actively manage a business. Some of these streams set their own age limits.
  • Spousal sponsorship: A Canadian citizen or permanent resident aged 18 or over can sponsor a spouse or partner of any age.
  • Super Visa: Parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents can stay up to 5 years per entry. It is a long-stay visitor visa, not PR. See our Canada Super Visa guide.

New Parents and Grandparents Program sponsorship applications have been paused since 15 July 2026, which makes the Super Visa the main long-stay option for parents.
