Canada visit visa cover letter sample beside a passport and IRCC document checklist

October 31, 2026

A Canada visit visa cover letter is a short letter that states who you are, why you are travelling and why you will return home. The visa itself is called a visitor visa or temporary resident visa (TRV). The letter is optional, but it puts your main facts in one place for the officer. This guide covers what to include in your Canada visit visa cover letter, how to structure it, four samples and how to upload it. For the full process, read our Canada visit visa from Pakistan 2026 guide. If you apply from Rawalpindi, Islamabad or Faisalabad, our Canada visit visa service in Pakistan can check your file first.

Is a Cover Letter Required for a Canada Visitor Visa?

No. A Canada visit visa cover letter is not on the required list. It helps when your documents need context, such as a refusal, a gap in work or study, a large deposit, a missing document or limited travel history.

What IRCC Requires and What Is Optional

After you answer an online questionnaire, IRCC creates your document checklist. It includes form IMM 5257 and the documents your case needs. The officer assesses the documents in your file. A letter of explanation is an optional upload that links those documents together. Your Canada visit visa cover letter goes into that optional upload.

Cover Letter, Purpose of Travel Letter and Letter of Explanation: What Is the Difference?

These three letters are often mixed up. Each has a different job.

Cover Letter

The cover letter summarizes the whole application: you, the trip, the funds, your ties to home and the enclosures.

Purpose of Travel Letter

A purpose of travel letter for Canada covers only the reason for your trip and your planned activities. Place it as the first section of your Canada visit visa cover letter.

Letter of Explanation

A letter of explanation for a Canada visa deals with one issue, such as a refusal, a gap or a deposit. You can write it as a labeled section inside your cover letter.

Invitation Letter

IRCC says it sometimes asks for an invitation letter, and the letter does not guarantee a visa. The host writes it personally and attaches a copy of a document that proves their status in Canada. Read our full guide to the Canada visit visa invitation letter and see IRCC’s letter of invitation page. The host’s letter supports your Canada visit visa cover letter. It does not replace it.

What to Include in Canada Visit the Visa Cover Letter

Cover these nine points in short and factual sentences.

Applicant Details and Application Type

Give your full name, date of birth, passport number and nationality. Add your UCI if you have one. State that you are applying for a visitor visa.

Purpose of Visit and Planned Activities

State one main purpose: tourism, a family visit or a business event. List your activities by city. Add that you will not work in Canada.

Travel Dates, Length of Stay and Itinerary

Give your arrival and departure dates and the cities you will visit. Match every date to your IMM 5257 form.

Accommodation Arrangements

Name the hotel and its address, or give your host’s address and status in Canada.

Funding: Who Pays and How

In your Canada visit visa cover letter, state who pays, the estimated total cost and the funds available. Write the amount in PKR and add the CAD figure. Your funds must cover your whole stay. Our Canada visit visa bank statement guide shows what to attach. If a sponsor pays, name the relationship and attach the sponsor’s statements.

Ties to Your Home Country:

IRCC expects you to show that you will leave Canada at the end of your visit. Give your employer the job title, years of service and approved leave dates. Business owners should add registration and tax records. List your close family and any property or lease. This section of your Canada visit visa cover letter carries the most weight.”

Travel History and Previous Visa Refusals

List earlier trips by country and year. Form IMM 5257 asks you to report any refusal. State the year, country and visa type, and explain what has changed since.

List of Enclosed Documents

Number each document in the order you upload it.

Statement of Intent to Leave Canada Before Your Authorised Stay Ends

Write: I will leave Canada before my authorized stay ends. Add your planned departure date.

How to Structure the Letter

Keep the layout of your Canada visit visa cover letter plain. One clear idea per paragraph is enough.

Header, Date and Addressee

Place your name, address, email, phone number, passport number and UCI at the top. Add the date. Address the letter to “Visa Officer, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).” Open with “Dear Visa Officer.”

Opening and Body Paragraphs

Open with two sentences: who you are, what you are applying for and your travel dates. Then give each topic its own paragraph, in this order: purpose, itinerary, accommodation, funds, ties and history.

Closing and Signature

End with “Yours sincerely,” your typed name, your signature and the date. List your enclosures below the signature.

Length

Aim for one page for your Canada visit visa cover letter. Two pages are fine if you must explain a refusal or a deposit. This is our advice, not an IRCC rule.

Letter of Explanation for Canada Visa: Common Scenarios

Write a separate labeled section for each issue that applies to you.

Previous Visa Refusal

State the year, country and visa type. Say what has changed, and attach proof, such as a new job or higher savings. Our guide to Canada visit visa refusal reasons explains what officers often ask.

Employment Gap

Give the dates and the reason, such as study or caring for a parent. Attach a record that supports it.

Source of a Large Deposit

State the source, the date and the amount. Attach proof, such as a sale deed or a gift letter. Officers look closely at deposits you cannot explain.

Missing Document

Name the document and give the reason it is missing. Attach a substitute and state the date you expect the original.

Limited Travel History

State that this is your first international trip. Add evidence of employment, family ties and funds.

How to Upload the Letter in Your IRCC Application

The Optional Documents section takes one file of up to 4 MB.

  1. Sign in to your IRCC secure account and answer the questionnaire.
  2. Open your document checklist.
  3. Save your letter, plus any extra explanation pages, as one file. Put the letter first.
  4. Find Client Information, then Optional Documents.
  5. Upload the file. It must be 4 MB or less, so compress it if needed.
  6. Upload your passport, bank statements and other papers in their own checklist slots.
  7. Confirm every file appears, then pay and submit.

Translations: this rule is for your supporting documents, not the letter. A document not in English or French needs a translation and a copy of the original. A certified translator stamps the translation. If you cannot use one, add an affidavit that swears the translation is accurate and that the translator knows both languages. See IRCC’s translation rules.
