Minimum IELTS score for Canada PR by program

April 24, 2026

Is IELTS 6.0 enough to get Canada PR? Not always. The minimum IELTS required for Canada PR is 6.0 in each band (CLB 7) for the Federal Skilled Worker Program, but it does not guarantee an invitation. The latest Canadian Experience Class draw required a minimum of 518 CRS points, and more than 229,000 candidates were in the Express Entry pool in late September 2026.

Raising your score to CLB 9 adds 56 CRS points for a single applicant, making it one of the fastest ways to close that gap. This guide shows the minimum score, the score that makes you competitive, and how applicants from Pakistan can reach it.

What Is the Minimum IELTS Score for Canada PR in 2026?

The IELTS required for Canada PR depends on which Express Entry program you apply through. The Federal Skilled Worker Program requires CLB 7, which is equivalent to IELTS General Training 6.0 in each band. The Canadian Experience Class and Federal Skilled Trades Program have lower minimums for some applicants.

Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)

CLB 5 for speaking and listening, CLB 4 for reading and writing

IRCC checks each band separately, not your overall IELTS score. For example, an overall score of 6.5 with 5.5 in writing does not meet CLB 7, because writing falls below the 6.0 minimum.

Meeting the minimum does not guarantee an Invitation to Apply (ITA). Your CRS score decides your rank in the Express Entry pool, and CLB 7 earns a single applicant only 68 of the 136 available language points. The last four Canadian Experience Class draws had cut-offs between 518 and 523 (August to September 2026).

What IELTS Score Do You Need to Be Competitive for Canada PR?

Aim for CLB 9, which means 8.0 in listening and 7.0 in reading, writing and speaking. CLB 9 earns the full 24 first-language points on the Federal Skilled Worker 100-point grid (pass mark 67). It is also the level at which CRS skill transferability points reach their maximum.

IELTS General or Academic for Canada PR?

Canada PR accepts only IELTS General Training. IRCC does not accept IELTS Academic for Express Entry, regardless of your score.

IELTS Academic is required for other purposes: Canadian universities ask for it for admission, and some licensing bodies require it for professional registration. For example, British Columbia’s nursing regulator accepts IELTS Academic, not General Training. As a result, nurses from Pakistan may need to take both tests: General Training for PR and Academic for their licence.

IELTS vs CELPIP vs PTE Core: Which Test Is Best in Pakistan?

IRCC treats all three English tests equally, so the best test is the one where you score highest. For applicants in Pakistan, the main differences are the speaking format, test location and fee.

How to Reach CLB 9 in IELTS from Pakistan

To reach CLB 9, you need 8.0 in listening and 7.0 in reading, writing and speaking. Listening has the highest requirement. Writing is marked against four criteria: task response, coherence and cohesion, vocabulary, and grammar.

  • Take an official IELTS practice test first. It identifies the band that limits your CLB level before you book the real test.

  • Structure Writing Task 2 carefully. It counts twice as much as Task 1. State your position in the introduction, use one main idea per paragraph and end with a clear conclusion.

  • Practice the General Training Task 1 letter. In General Training, Task 1 is a letter, not a graph or chart description.

  • Practice with a range of English accents. The listening test uses a variety of speakers, and CLB 9 requires 8.0 in this skill.

  • Expand your speaking answers. Support each answer with a reason and an example, and avoid memorised answers.

  • Book the test when your practice scores are stable. IRCC does not accept One Skill Retake, so if one band falls short, you must retake the full test.
