How to Apply for Canada PR as a Medical Laboratory Technologist
The process to immigrate to Canada as a medical lab technologist has six main steps.
Step 1: Obtain an Educational Credential Assessment
If your education was completed outside Canada, you generally need an Educational Credential Assessment issued by an organisation designated by IRCC. Follow the document-submission requirements provided by the organisation you select.
Your ECA must be less than five years old when you create your profile and again when you submit your application. It confirms Canadian equivalency; it does not authorise you to practise.
Step 2: Complete an approved language test
IRCC accepts IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General and PTE Core for English, and TEF Canada or TCF Canada for French.
If your results are approaching their expiry date while you remain in the pool, make sure they remain valid when you submit your permanent residence application.
Step 3: Meet the category work experience requirement
You need at least 12 months of full-time work experience, or the part-time equivalent, within the previous three years. The experience must be in a single listed occupation, may be gained in Canada or abroad, and need not be continuous.
Our guide on the Express Entry new rules covers this requirement in detail.
Step 4: Create your Express Entry profile
You must also qualify for one of the three programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Canadian Experience Class or the Federal Skilled Trades Program.
Create your profile through your IRCC secure account and enter your education, language results and work history, selecting the NOC that accurately reflects your duties. IRCC calculates your CRS score out of 1,200 and places eligible candidates in the pool.
Creating a profile does not guarantee an invitation.
Step 5: Receive an Invitation Through a Healthcare Category Round
Candidates who meet the category requirements are ranked by CRS score, and the highest-ranking are invited.
Date | CRS cut-off | Invitations |
20 February 2026 | 467 | 4,000 |
25 June 2026 | 475 | 4,000 |
4 September 2026 | 475 | 3,500 |
These are historical results, not a fixed requirement. The cut-off moves with the number invited and the scores of eligible candidates in each round.
Step 6: Submit your application
You have 60 calendar days from your invitation to submit a complete application through your IRCC account, following the personalised document checklist.
For Express Entry, you must complete an upfront medical examination after receiving an ITA and before submitting your permanent residence application. Our guide on what to do after receiving an ITA sets out that stage in full.
Do You Need Canadian MLT Registration to Immigrate?
No. Canadian MLT registration is not required for eligibility under the 2026 Healthcare and Social Services category. IRCC assesses your eligibility for permanent residence, while provincial or territorial regulatory authorities assess whether you meet the requirements to practise as a medical laboratory technologist.
These are separate processes, and the requirements for professional registration depend on the province or territory where you intend to work. Internationally educated MLTs may begin the applicable registration or credential-assessment process before or after arriving in Canada, depending on the jurisdiction and pathway.
Permanent residence does not authorize you to practise as a medical laboratory technologist. You must obtain the required registration or authorization from the relevant provincial or territorial regulator before working in the profession.
What Your Reference Letter Must Prove
IRCC assesses your experience against the lead statement and most of the main duties of NOC 32120, not against your job title.
Laboratory staff in Pakistan are frequently designated by section or seniority rather than by profession. A technologist running haematology, clinical chemistry or microbiology benches may appear on paper as a technician or an assistant, so the letter has to describe the work rather than repeat the designation.
It should state your job title, employment dates, weekly hours, salary and duties, on the letterhead of the employing organisation. It must be signed by your supervisor or HR officer, with their name, position and a contact email on the company domain.
The duties must be written by your employer rather than copied from the NOC website. Our guide on the reference letter for Canada immigration sets out exactly what IRCC checks.
Registration and Credential Recognition
You will need provincial registration to work as a medical laboratory technologist in Canada, and the assessment system for internationally educated applicants changed during 2025.
Prior Learning Assessments moved to the Canadian Alliance of Medical Laboratory Professionals Regulators in June 2025, and entry-to-practice examinations followed on 1 November 2025.
Eleven jurisdictions now use CAMLPR: Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Nunavut, Northwest Territories and Yukon. Alberta continues to use the previous process.
The CAMLPR pathway runs through a Prior Learning Assessment, Fields-of-Practice examinations, and then application to the provincial regulator. CAMLPR states that completing the process does not by itself guarantee registration or employment. Full details are on the CAMLPR website.
Saskatchewan operates a determination process for applicants still outside Canada who are immigrating through its provincial nominee program. It begins with the CAMLPR Prior Learning Assessment, which you can complete before arriving.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a job offer?
No. A job offer is not required and no longer adds CRS points, though some provincial streams still require one.
What CRS score do I need?
There is no fixed cut-off. Healthcare rounds recorded 467 in February 2026 and 475 in June and September.
My designation says technician, not technologist. Can I still apply?
Yes, if your duties match NOC 32120. IRCC assesses the work you performed rather than the title you held, so your reference letter must set out those duties.
Can laboratory assistants apply?
Yes. Medical laboratory assistants and related technical occupations fall under NOC 33101, which is on the same list at TEER 3.
Can I start the credential assessment from Pakistan?
Yes, for some provinces. Saskatchewan runs a determination process for applicants outside Canada immigrating through its nominee program, beginning with the CAMLPR Prior Learning Assessment. Registration follows once you are eligible to work in Canada.
How long does the whole process take?
Most of the wait is spent in the pool before an invitation. After you submit, IRCC aims to finalise 80 percent of complete Express Entry applications within six months.
