Psychologist NOC 31200 and Express Entry Draws

NOC 31200 is a TEER 1 occupation covering clinical psychologists, research psychologists and psychological associates. Psychiatrists are excluded because they are medical doctors under NOC 31100.

That code appears on the Express Entry healthcare and social services list. The category asks for 12 months of full-time work in one listed occupation within the last three years. An equal amount of part-time work also counts.

IRCC accepts this experience from Canada or abroad, regardless of your primary occupation. The 12 months do not need to be continuous.

Psychologist, Counselling Therapist, or Social Worker

Three related occupations appear on the healthcare list, and each has its own code. The code you claim decides which provincial streams you can use.

Eligibility Requirements for Psychologists

Eligibility runs on two tracks. IRCC decides whether you can apply for permanent residence. The provincial college decides whether you can register and practice. Permanent residence alone does not let you work as a psychologist.

Express Entry Program Eligibility

You must qualify for one of the Express Entry programs. With foreign work experience you would normally use the Federal Skilled Worker Program. With Canadian experience you may use the Canadian Experience Class. Neither requires a job offer.

The healthcare category adds its own 12-month experience condition, described above. That condition is separate from the program’s own experience rule.

Language Requirements

The Federal Skilled Worker Program requires CLB 7 in all four English abilities, or the same NCLC level in French. Reaching CLB 9 is worth the extra effort, because it doubles the skill transferability points from 25 to 50.

Educational Credential Assessment

Psychologists may use any of the five designated organizations: CES at the University of Toronto, ICAS, WES, IQAS and ICES at BCIT. Physicians and pharmacists must use a profession-specific body, and psychology has none.

An ECA is valid for five years. It must be valid when you create the Express Entry profile and again when you submit the PR application.

Provincial Registration

An ECA does not replace the review a provincial college runs before it registers you. Each regulator sets its own requirements, which may include an academic assessment, supervised practice and examinations.

The College of Alberta Psychologists, for example, evaluates credentials itself. You do not need registration to create an Express Entry profile, but you do need it before you can practice.

Can You Register as a Psychologist in Canada With a Master’s Degree?

Yes, in six of the twelve regulated provinces and territories. A master’s degree meets the education requirement in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. The other six require a doctorate.

Your ECA report states the Canadian equivalent of your Pakistani degree. Get it before you choose a province, because that one document decides which provinces are open to you.

Psychological associate is a separate registration category, not a lower grade of the psychologist title.

Ontario’s Proposed Change for Master’s Graduates

Ontario may drop its doctoral requirement. The College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario approved three changes in December 2025 and sent them to the Ministry of Health.

The first cuts the post-master’s work requirement from four years to one. The second allows registration as a psychologist based on an approved graduate degree. The third recognizes accrediting bodies outside the United States.

Canada PR for Psychologists: Expected CRS Score

A single 32-year-old psychologist scores 453 CRS points, which is 22 points below the last healthcare cut-off of 475. The score assumes a master’s degree, CLB 9 in all four English abilities and three or more years of work experience.

A doctorate adds only 15 CRS points, taking the same profile to 468. It also doubles the number of provinces where you can register, from six to twelve. For most Pakistani applicants, the licensing gain matters more than the points.

French adds more points than a doctorate. NCLC 7 in all four French abilities is worth up to 62 points, which lifts the same profile to 515. Our CRS score breakdown explains every factor.

Which Province Should a Psychologist Choose?

Saskatchewan is the strongest match for a master’s-level psychologist. It accepts the degree, Job Bank rates its outlook as very good, and its median wage is close to the national figure.

Alberta pays the most, at a median of CAD 58.00 per hour and a high of CAD 109.00. Job Bank also rates Nova Scotia very good, but that province asks for four years of practice after the degree. That is the longest wait on this list.

A provincial nomination adds 600 CRS points, but it is not a license. Saskatchewan states plainly that being nominated does not guarantee registration in a regulated occupation.

Psychologist License in Canada: Exams and Supervised Practice 

Permanent residence does not let you practice. Registration rules differ by province, but most set the same three requirements: an approved degree, supervised practice hours and the EPPP.

EPPP and Other Licensing Exams

Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland and Labrador set the EPPP pass mark at 70%. Several provinces add an oral or jurisprudence examination. Quebec is the exception and requires an ethics course instead. The Canadian Psychological Association publishes the licensing requirements by province.

The Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards runs the exam. Part 1 covers knowledge, at an application fee of USD 600. Part 2 covers skills, at USD 450. Test center charges are separate.

The exam runs at Pearson VUE centers in the United States and Canada, so budget for travel. Confirm the current center list with ASPPB before booking.

Alberta Registration for Internationally Trained Psychologists 

Alberta requires internationally trained applicants to register with a psychology regulator in their home country and maintain good standing. You also need two years of independent practice within the last five.

Approved applicants receive provisional registration and work under a supervisor, then pass the EPPP and the LEAP examination.
