An Australia visit visa cover letter is a one-page letter that explains why you are travelling to Australia and why you will return home. You upload it with your Visitor visa (subclass 600) application in ImmiAccount. The cover letter is not compulsory but it helps the officer understand your case. The officer decides your case on your documents. Your letter helps them find the right proof quickly.
This guide covers what to write, how to format the letter and which mistakes to avoid. It ends with a sample for Pakistani applicants. For the full application, read our Australia visit visa requirements guide or see our Australia visit visa service.

ToggleWhat Is an Australia Visit Visa Cover Letter and Why Does It Help?
It is a one-page summary of your trip, your funds and your ties to Pakistan. It is not a Home Affairs form, so you write it in your own words.
The letter does not replace evidence. Your bank statements, leave letter and itinerary prove each claim and the letter points the officer to them.
Subclass 600 Cover Letter: What Home Affairs Looks For
A subclass 600 cover letter should answer one key question: will you visit Australia and then go home? Home Affairs calls this the genuine visitor requirement, and it sits in clause 600.211 of the Migration Regulations 1994. Officers also check that you have enough money for your stay and that you will not work in Australia. The full rules are on the visitor visa (subclass 600) page.
The Tourist stream (apply outside Australia) covers holidays, cruises and visits to family or friends. You must be outside Australia when you apply and when Home Affairs decides your application. Home Affairs sets the length of stay, which can be 3, 6 or 12 months, so request only the period that matches your itinerary.
Genuine Visitor Statement: How to Show You Will Return Home
A genuine visitor statement for Australia is not a separate form. Home Affairs has no form with this name. It is simply the part of your cover letter that shows you will return. It gives your purpose, your travel dates and your reasons to go back to Pakistan, and it names the document that proves each point.
The Pakistan checklist for the subclass 600 asks for evidence of your circumstances at home. Use the documents that apply to you:
- Employed: an employer letter that states your position, income and length of employment; lists your approved leave dates and confirms that you will resume work after your trip
- Self-employed: your business name, address and nature of business, a business registration licence, business bank statements and a certified NTN registration certificate
- Family: an NADRA Family Registration Certificate and, if you are married, a Marriage Registration Certificate or Nikah Nama
- Assets: land or property ownership papers, shares or investments, if you hold them
- Student: evidence of your enrollment at your school, college or university
State each tie in one sentence and name its proof, for example: “My employer’s leave letter is attached.”
What to Include in Your Australia Visit Visa Cover Letter
Your Australia visit visa cover letter should contain these eight items:
- Your full name, passport number and date of birth
- The visa and stream: Visitor visa (subclass 600), tourist stream
- The purpose of your visit and your travel dates
- A city-by-city plan with dates
- How you will pay for flights, accommodation and daily costs
- Where you will stay in Australia
- Your job, business or study details in Pakistan
- A list of the documents you have attached
If a relative or friend in Australia is hosting you, name them in the letter and attach their invitation letter.
Australia Tourist Visa Letter Format: Step-by-Step Structure
An Australia tourist visa letter should fit on one page, in plain English, with short paragraphs.
- Header: your name, address, phone number, email address and the date.
- Addressee: Department of Home Affairs.
- Subject line: Visitor visa (subclass 600) application, followed by your full name and passport number.
- First paragraph: who you are, why you are visiting and for how long.
- Second paragraph: your dates, your city-by-city plan and where you will stay.
- Third paragraph: how you will fund the trip and the ties that bring you back to Pakistan.
- Closing: one polite sentence, your signature and the list of attached documents.

How to Explain Your Travel Purpose, Itinerary and Funds
State the purpose in one sentence, such as: “I am visiting my brother in Melbourne for three weeks.” Then list your cities, your dates and your accommodation.
Home Affairs does not set a fixed amount for funds. It asks for proof that you can pay for your stay and for your departure from Australia. The Pakistan checklist for the subclass 600 asks for a bank account maintenance letter and bank statements for the last three months, both endorsed or stamped by the bank. It also asks for pay slips for the last three months and, if you hold them, proof of land, property, shares or investments.
The checklist also asks for your accommodation details and planned itinerary. If a relative or friend in Australia funds your visit, attach their letter with their full name, date of birth, relationship to you and the period they will support you. Add their bank statements and pay slips for the last three months. The checklist advises applicants not to confirm bookings or buy airline tickets until Home Affairs decides the application.
If you are travelling for meetings or a conference, read our guide to the Australia business visitor visa, because that stream has its own requirements.
Cover Letter Mistakes to Avoid
Check your draft for these errors:
- Copying a sample word for word, so the letter describes someone else’s situation
- Showing different dates in the letter, itinerary and leave letter
- Claiming funds without attaching bank statements
- Writing several pages instead of one
- Leaving out a previous visa refusal or immigration problem, because failing to disclose it can count as misleading information
- Giving false or exaggerated details
Under Public Interest Criterion 4020, a refusal for false or misleading information or a bogus document can bar you from a new visa for three years. A waiver can apply in some cases. Write only what you can prove.

Dear Visa Officer,
I am applying for a Visitor visa to visit my brother in Melbourne for three weeks, from 10 January 2027 to 31 January 2027. This is my first visit to Australia.
I will stay at my brother’s home in Melbourne and spend four days in Sydney. I plan to return to Islamabad on 31 January 2027.
I work as an accountant at a firm in Rawalpindi, and my employer has approved leave for these dates. I will return to work on 3 February 2027. My parents live with me in Pakistan. My bank statements for the last three months, stamped by my bank, show a balance of PKR 2,400,000, which covers my flights and costs.
I have attached my passport, leave letter, bank statements, bank maintenance letter, itinerary, polio vaccination certificate and my brother’s invitation letter. Thank you for considering my application.
Yours sincerely,
Ayesha Khan
FAQs
Should I attach documents to the cover letter?
Yes. List every attached document at the end of the letter. For Pakistani applicants, the list usually includes the passport, leave letter, bank statements, bank maintenance letter, itinerary and a valid polio vaccination certificate.
How long should the letter be?
One page, in three or four short paragraphs. Each statement should match an attached document.
Can I reuse an old letter for a new trip?
No. Write a new letter for each application, because the purpose, dates, funds and host details change and must match the new documents.
Does a cover letter guarantee approval?
No. The officer decides on your whole application against the visa criteria.
